Sugar Alcohol. It’s Not Sugar. Or Alcohol.
I think everyone should read food labels. It’s the only way to know what you’re putting in your mouth and your bloodstream. It’s the only way to know, for instance, that the beef jerky you’re eating as part of your Paleo diet actually has actually been drenched with a bunch of added sugar. Whoa. That’s not Paleo, man.
But as I’ve learned the hard way, that’s why you can’t take packaged foods at face value. You’ve got to check their backsides. You’ve got to read the nutrition panel.
If you’ve read the labels of nush cakes, which I hope you have, you know they contain a sweetener called erythritol. It’s a sugar alcohol. At least, that’s what it’s called, but it’s not really a sugar and it’s not alcohol, either. It actually looks—and tastes—a lot like regular table sugar.
Erythritol is found naturally in different fruits including grapes and pears, but to make it useful in sweetening foods such as nush cakes it goes through a fermentation process, similar to the fermentation process used to produce wine and beer. Thus, the name “sugar alcohol.”
The reason I like erythritol is that it has virtually no calories, and it doesn’t spike your blood sugar the way other sweeteners do. So it doesn’t put you on that sugar roller coaster you know so well. You know, that blood-sugar spike-crash that only makes you want more sugar.
Erythritol has some other advocates besides myself. It’s the sweetener in some of my favorite products, like Bai antioxidant infusion drinks. And in 2014, the Center for Science in the Public Interest declared erythritol safe to eat in a comprehensive, heavily-researched report on the use of non-nutritive sweeteners. Further, the American Diabetes Association has said, “Foods with low- or reduced-calorie sweeteners can have fewer calories than foods made with sugar and other caloric sweeteners. That can be helpful if you’re trying to lose weight or even to prevent weight gain. These products often times also have less carbohydrate which can be helpful in managing blood glucose levels.”
Here at nush, we know you want something that tastes good. Something you can have with your coffee, or when you get the hungries in the middle of the afternoon. So we’ve packed our nush cakes with the wonderful textures and flavors of real food. And they have a little bit of sweetener, too. Erythritol.
So that’ a little more about us. Want to know more about Bai?
